Barton drives in three, scores game-winner from second on wild pitch
(Newark, N.J., Jul. 23, 2010) - Brian Barton, who drove in three runs with a clutch bases-loaded triple in the fifth inning, alertly came around to score from second on a wild pitch in the seventh with the game-winning run as the Newark Bears defeated the Somerset Patriots 9-8 in come-from behind fashion on Friday night at Bears & Eagles Riverfront Stadium.
Barton, who has been on an offensive tear since he was acquired in a trade with Bridgeport last month, batting .387 with six homers and 24 RBI, was on second base in the seventh after doubling, sending Daryle Ward to third. With two out, Isaiah Kaaihue struck out swinging, but reached safely on a wild pitch. As the ball rolled to the backstop, both Ward and Barton scored, giving the Bears the tying and go-ahead runs.
The Patriots took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning, when Noah Hall took a Ryan Glynn offering over the wall in left field for a homer, his third of the season. Newark answered in the home half, scoring three times, all coming via the long ball. Carl Everett tied the game at 1-1 with his fourth homer of the year, then Randy Gress belted a two-run shot, his second on the season, giving the Bears a 3-1 advantage.
Somerset exploded for four runs off Glynn in the top of the fourth inning. Jason Belcher drove in a run with a single, cutting the Bears’ lead to 3-2, then Pete LaForest delivered the big blow, a three-run homer, giving Somerset a 5-3 lead. Newark regained the lead in the home fifth, scoring four times, with Barton coming through in the clutch. Daryle Ward drove in the first run with a bases loaded walk, cutting Somerset’s lead to 5-4, then Barton cleared the bases with a triple, putting Newark ahead, 7-5. The Patriots bounced right back with a run in the sixth on an RBI double from LaForest and adding two runs in the seventh. Tim Raines, Jr. tripled and scored on a wild pitch and Josh Pressley drove in a run with a double to give the Patriots an 8-7 lead, setting up the Bears’ game-winning rally.
Glynn tossed six innings, allowing six runs and six hits, with eight strikeouts and two walks in a no decision. Justin Jones surrendered seven runs, six earned and five hits, with six walk and seven strikeouts. Jones also didn't factor in the decision. Reliever Shane Youman (1-0) notched the win, tossing an inning with two unearned runs and two hits. Jeff Dunn (2-2) gave up back-to-back hits to start the seventh and the batters came around to score, both unearned. Greg Reinhard pitched a scoreless inning and Michael Nix pitched the ninth for his fifth save.
